Webinar: Service Life Design per CSA S6:25 Applied to MTO Structures
October 5 at 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Presenters:
Kris Mermigas, P.Eng., Head of Design and Standards, Structures Office
In this session, MTO will provide an explanation of how to apply the service life design provisions of CSA S6:25 to MTO structures.
CSA S6:25, Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, builds on service life design concepts introduced in S6:19 by providing a methodology and design provisions to achieve a 75 years design service life by following all steps of the code. The service life design procedure is a significant addition which guides the designer to make appropriate decisions related to the structural system, structural details, materials, and protection systems. Firstly, the designer identifies replaceable and non-replaceable components in the structure, defines the design service life for each, and classifies exposure zones for all surfaces of the structure. Secondly, the user examines all deterioration mechanisms applicable to each exposure zone and material of each component’s exposure. Finally, the user applies mitigation measures which are mapped to the deterioration mechanisms through exposure classes. The MTO Structural Manual issued in 2025 was updated in to be compatible with the code’s framework but has additional requirements which build on the CSA S6 provisions. The exposure classes can also be used to assess the risk of deterioration in existing structures and rehabilitation.
